The matrix below shows every conversion this tool can do in your browser, without uploading anything. Conversions are grouped by source family: rich documents, spreadsheets, plain text and PDF.
Why convert documents in your browser?
Most "free online document converters" work by uploading your file to a server, running a conversion there, and emailing you a link. That works — but it leaves a copy of your document on infrastructure you don't control. If that server is breached, misconfigured, or simply careless about cleanup, your contract, payslip, scanned ID or internal report could leak.
This tool sidesteps the problem entirely. Every conversion runs inside this tab, using well-known
open-source JavaScript libraries — SheetJS for spreadsheets, mammoth.js for DOCX,
pdf.js for PDF text, jsPDF
for generating PDFs, and a few smaller helpers. When you close the tab, the file is gone.
How it works (step-by-step)
- Drop your file. Click the upload area or drag a document onto it. The "From" format is auto-detected from the file extension — you can override it.
- Choose the target format. Pick what you want to convert to. The button stays disabled if the chosen pair isn't supported in the browser, and a hint explains why.
- Click Convert & download. The first time you use a particular conversion, the necessary library loads from a CDN (about 100–600 KB depending on the format). Your file is then read, converted in memory, and saved to your downloads folder.
What can’t run in the browser?
Some document conversions genuinely need a server. We don’t list them here because we refuse to silently upload your file. In particular:
- DOC (legacy binary Word, pre-2007) — needs a server-side converter such as LibreOffice.
- PPT / PPTX (PowerPoint) as input — no usable browser library can parse slide layouts.
- ODT / ODP (OpenDocument text / presentations) — likewise no usable browser library.
- PDF → DOCX / XLSX with layout fidelity — possible only with heavy server-side tools. We do offer PDF → text, HTML and Markdown.
If you need any of these, you’ll need a converter that uploads your file. We’d rather be upfront about it than pretend.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
Why is some conversion missing or greyed out?
.doc,
PowerPoint, and PDF-to-Word-with-fidelity require server-side tools we deliberately don’t use. If a
"To" format isn’t in the dropdown for your input, it means there’s no good in-browser path for
that pair.
