Why compress a PDF in your browser?

Scanned contracts, board packs, and image-heavy reports often hit email or upload limits. Cloud compressors require you to send the whole file to someone else’s server — including every page of personal or confidential content. Just Tool It re-renders pages with PDF.js and rebuilds a smaller PDF with pdf-lib entirely in this tab. You choose DPI and JPEG quality, see original vs compressed size, then download. Nothing is uploaded; close the tab and the in-memory pages are gone.

How to compress a PDF (step-by-step)

  1. Drop your PDF onto the dropzone (or browse from disk).
  2. Choose DPI (lower = smaller file) and JPEG quality for page images.
  3. Click Compress and wait for the progress bar — rendering happens on your CPU.
  4. Compare original vs new size, then download the compressed PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Will text stay selectable after compression?
This compressor re-renders each page as a JPEG inside a new PDF. That is ideal for scans and photo-heavy files, but text becomes raster (not a live text layer). For lossless page reorganization without re-encoding, use other PDF tools such as merge, split, or rearrange.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
No. PDF.js reads the file as an ArrayBuffer in memory; pages are drawn to a canvas and re-packed with pdf-lib. You can watch the Network panel while compressing: no PDF bytes are POSTed to Just Tool It.
What DPI and quality should I pick?
For email, 100–150 DPI and quality around 70% is usually enough. For print review, try 200 DPI. Always check the size readout before you rely on the result for archival use.
Is there a file size limit?
Just Tool It does not impose a fixed cloud quota. Limits come from your device RAM and browser. Multi-hundred-page scans may need a desktop with plenty of memory.
