OCR PDF

Turn a scanned PDF into a searchable one. Tesseract.js (WASM) runs in this tab. First run downloads ~10 MB language data per language; cached after.

Notes
  • Searchable PDF rasterizes each page and overlays an invisible OCR text layer — text becomes copyable / searchable in most readers.
  • Non-Latin scripts (CJK, Arabic, etc.) are fully supported in the Plain text output. The searchable-PDF text layer embeds Helvetica and may not faithfully reproduce non-Latin characters; the visible page image is intact regardless.
  • Long PDFs can take a while — each page is rendered, OCR'd, and re-embedded locally.

Why run PDF OCR in the browser?

Scanned contracts and ID packs are exactly the documents you should not upload to a random OCR SaaS. This tool renders PDF pages and runs Tesseract.js (WebAssembly) locally to produce searchable text or a searchable PDF workflow depending on the UI. Language data (~10 MB per language) downloads on first use and can be cached afterward. On-device OCR keeps sensitive scans inside your machine.

How to OCR a PDF offline-friendly

  1. Drop a scanned or image-based PDF.
  2. Select OCR language(s); first use downloads the language pack.
  3. Start OCR and wait while each page is recognized in this tab.
  4. Copy text or download the result the tool provides.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is browser OCR?
Tesseract does well on clean, high-contrast scans and typed pages. Handwriting, heavy skew, or low DPI reduce accuracy. Rescan at 300 DPI when possible.
Are document images uploaded?
No. Page bitmaps and recognition run in-browser. Only the open-source language model files may download from a CDN on first use — not your PDF content.
Which languages are supported?
Whatever language packs the UI exposes via Tesseract. English is typical by default; add packs as needed.
Can I OCR a photo of a document?
For single images, try the Image to Text tool. This page is optimized for multi-page PDFs.
